I learned to play guitar at the age of 6 when my Dad bought me an acoustic guitar from Sears. Dad taught me the basics being a band musician himself in the late 1930’s and 1940’s after WWII. I went on to play in popular regional bands in the 1960’s and shared the stages with talents like B.J. Thomas, BB King, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland and Albert Collins. After I returned from a gig courtesy of the US Army, I laid it down for a while until the late 1980's where I picked up with a great bunch of musicians and we formed the Good News Band which later turned into a group called Blues2Joy. After 33 years I am still connected with that group as we play gigs for homeless shelters, prisons and drug rehab centers. I count it an honor and a privilege to be a part of such a vital ministry as Blues2Joy. However, I found myself wanting to write, record and perform many different styles of music and reach out to the world with music of hope and inspiration with a positive spin. Hello The Frisco Circle Band Project. The musicians and songwriters of this project are top notch and I enjoy so much sharing our music with the people of the planet.

I have played drums most of my life. My musical career began 25 years ago in church.
In 2008 I joined a local ministry band called Blues2Joy. I am still associated with that group. We play to the homeless, the imprisoned and to wandering souls in general, which is a state we all find ourselves in at some point in our lives. I guess I receive more of a blessing from them as they say they receive from us.
In a quest to expand and challenge my creative desires I found my way to The Frisco Circle Band Project. This group is loaded with experience and fresh talent and I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with this group of songwriters and musicians.

Eric Ross is a modern-day troubadour on a quest for enlightenment. Born and raised in Minnesota, Eric has lived and worked all over - Maine, Oregon, Alaska, Europe - collecting experiences and stories, losses and gains, wisdom and heartbreak. It all finds a home in a growing musical catalogue that borrows as much from classic folk musicians like Woody Guthrie as it does from more recent troubadours like John Prine and Lyle Lovett.

I started playing guitar (for the third time) when I was laid up with a knee injury at age 22 in Asheville, NC. (There was not enough underlying talent to ignite into a sustaining flame the first two times the spark of inspiration struck). My first live gig, however, wasn’t until over 25 years later when a certain nameless individual (who is associated with Frisco Circle, and whose initials are JW) tricked me into SINGING, of all things, on a couple of Fabulous Thunderbirds songs in front of a corporate gathering of a couple hundred people. No rotten fruit or half-empty beer bottles were thrown, and a monster was born. Under the impression that my singing distracted listeners from my iffy guitar chops, and that my guitar playing distracted listeners from realizing my voice was at best “interesting”, I was emboldened to carry on. A few years and a couple of bands later, I have played and sung to medium-sized (and smaller) crowds in Pennsylvania, Chicago, New Orleans, and my adopted home town of Cleveland, USA.

I was born and raised in the mountain shadows and the beach sunshine of 1960’s Southern California with car, surf, sports and of course, music influences. Music performances began with air guitar bands in elementary school, with my big break coming as punk rock hit SoCal in the late 70’s giving opportunity to bands who could barely play 3 chords. From the British Invasion, to Motown, Blues, Punk, Ska and World Beat Music, I just love any music that is inspired, makes you move, or simply moves you. Playing alone sucks and contributing to The Frisco Circle Band Project is the opportunity of a lifetime.
Heading into six decades on Earth, I like to say, “Growing old is inevitable, but growing up is optional”.

Not sure where I got my passion for music. May have been my father. Don’t know if you would call him a musician, but he was a bugler in the Navy. After WWII, a drummer with the Carolina Rhythm Boys - which was not conducive to having a wife, six kids, and a day job. Which explains why I didn’t see much of him after age five. OK, maybe you could call him a musician.
All my siblings played an instrument, and their musical interests informed mine - Del Shannon, Beatles, Dylan, Beach Boys, and Temptations. I added my own throughout the formative years of the late 60’s and early 70’s as rock music exploded with Hendrix, Zeppelin, and Cream to name a few. But also found room for the Modern Jazz Quartet and Ravi Shankar.
I had picked up the guitar in middle school, first learning CCR (still a big Fogerty fan). I also enjoyed banging on white goods – Wipeout - of course; eventually moving on to real drums. My love of music took a turn my senior year in high school when I got a weekend job at the local radio station. After high school, it became full-time. I spent the next few years at small market stations in eastern NC before moving on to get my degree in electrical engineering.
For many years the demands of career and family limited musical pursuits to praise bands and ad hoc gatherings. Time now to pursue my other life-long interests of playing music and song writing. I’m excited to be a part of the Frisco Circle Band Project, and looking forward to expanding the circle of inclusion.
